Schools Out For Summer – Don’t Forget Hot Dots for your Preschooler!

Everyone loves the summer. Most of us know it as a time of sunshine, beaches and vacations. But it has an even greater appeal for kids who get an almost three-month long summer break from school. We all know how important good schooling is for our kids, but we must also remember when we were young and how much we looked forward to summer vacation. It’s a time when kids get to play each and every day and concentrate on their hobbies and interests, as well as attend summer camps and engage in other such fun activities.

Summer truly is magical when you’re a kid, there’s no denying that. But there is a very real issue we would like to raise in today’s blog, one which suggests that it’s probably not a good idea to let children forget about school completely during summer vacation. It’s a problem called Summer Learning Loss. Summer Learning Loss is the name given to the loss of academic skills and knowledge that can take place over the course of summer vacation. This perceived loss in learning varies between different age groups and different grades, and also effects certain subjects more than others, studies have shown. On average it has been found that students score lower on standardized tests at the end of the summer than they do at the beginning of the summer break from school (on the same test). Summer Learning Loss for all students is estimated to be equal to about 1 month of schooling, but as we said above it can vary between subjects. Math seems to be worst effected with students losing an average of almost three months of learning over the summer. That’s a lot of math teaching gone down the drain!

You may not be aware of the prevalence of  Summer Learning Loss, but it has been recognized for quite some time that the summer break from school is a period when students’ rate Hot Dots Jr. Getting Ready for School Setof academic development declines significantly relative to the school year. In fact, two-thirds of the academic achievement gap in reading and language found among high school students has been explained through the learning loss that occurs during the summer months of the primary school years, so it’s not just math learning that is severely impacted either.

Of course this is leading to the inevitable question; What can be done to tackle Summer Learning Loss? Year Round Education has been proposed as an alternative method of schooling, but this is a long way from ever becoming Department of Education policy – and would we really want that for our kids anyway? It’s really down to you to make sure your kids’ minds are being stimulated throughout the summer break from school. This doesn’t mean you should coup them up inside at a desk with a stack of books to go through all summer long, but rather you should try and engage them in fun activities and games that promote learning and give their young brains a good workout!

Here at Elite Toy Store we have some great options for you in this department. For the younger kids we recommend the Talking Hot Dots Pen which comes as part of the Hot Dots Jr. Getting Ready for School Set. This friendly talking pen is suitable for kids of pre-kindergarten age and up and helps promote early learning with lights and sound effects that guide children through 160 different activities. Additional pens are available separately to allow multiple children to use the kit at once, making this a great group activity for a bunch of friends to try out! The Talking Hot Dots Pen provides immediate feedback that rewards progress and corrects mistakes so children can learn at their own pace – the ideal antidote to Summer Learning Loss! The set includes 80 richly illustrated, double-sided activity cards that are pressure-sensitive and work in conjunction with the Talking Hot Dots Pen.

For grades 2 and up we have a great learning game from the folks at Educational Insights called the WORDiac. The sleek look and feel of a hand-held video game encourages students to practice using important vocabulary words that they will encounter in textbooks and on standardized tests. As students play fun word games and take quick quizzes, they review over 1,000 important content-area and academic vocabulary words. There are beginner and advanced levels so that kids of all ages can take advantage of this great learning tool. It even presents questions in standardized test format!

There you have it, two great ways to stave off the negative effects of Summer Learning Loss during the extended summer break from school. The Talking Hot Dots Pen and the WORDiac are available from Elite Toy Store now, both priced at $39.99 and eligible for free shipping. Don’t miss out!

Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder get a New and Innovative Bike

The unique and innovative design has been awarded the “The Toy Man” Seal of Approval. In their own evaluation they called the Quadrabyke, “one tough product!” It took a serious beating yet emerged unscathed in a virtual sense.
The Quadra-Byke was also evaluated by a design engineer for Special Needs Mobility Equipment.
“Our company designs special mobility equipment for children with ‘Special Needs’ who have mobility impairment concerns. As we were evaluating the Quadrabyke we decided to use the bike with a group of families with ASD children. During this study. the Quadrabyke was referred to by the physical therapists participating in the study as, ‘…a true marvel in regard to safety, functionality, and visual appeal with our ASD kids. Having the option for dual wheels in the front of the bike with brakes for front and rear wheels provides more stable control of the Quadrabyke when in tricycle mode. The potential risk of injury to a toddler is reduced greatly in comparison with the default design of the boxed tricycle products available in retail stores.”

A “Quad Bike” allows toddlers to love bike riding and build confidence. It starts as a “Quad-Cycle.” As the child learns hand and foot coordination they have 4 wheels. The next step is the tricycle. Not just any tri-cycle. A unique design that allow the 2 wheels to be in the rear or the front. The dual wheels in the front will provide better stabilization and lower the risk of injury. Unlike their predeccors with the dual rear wheels. As the toddler grow and develops, take the next step. Now he/she is ready for the next step; bi-cycle. The traditional bike for “whenever the child is ready.”  The two wheel bike builds self esteem, gross motor skills and promotes excercise.

The Quadra-byke is far the best bike out there for ages 3- 6. It grows with the child and can withstand the extensive use as a child grows. It works beautifully and flawlessly, requiring very low maintenance. It is user friendly and assures the consumer that it will provide many years of fun and pleasure. The Quadra-byke is available at an affordable price yet maintains quality well beyond that of standard retail boxed products.  This will not be found in your ordinary bike shop.
The Quadrabyke had plenty its share of attention when it comes to consumer feedback.  Moms do not hesitate in the slightest to try the product out with their toddlers.  Moms as well as many Dads, state it is nothing short of absolute amazement. It is phenomonal how the bike can be changed so easily from 2 to 3 to 4 wheels yet still remain steady with no apparent risk to child safety, it is wonderful. The bike is far superior to many others and even has a better price. Plain and simple: The bike is affordable and is very safe. The bike will arrive at EliteToyStore.com the end of May 2011.

Jeopardy goes into the Classroom for Teachers Tournament

Educational Insights is sponsoring the first Jeopardy Teacher’s Tournament. New York will have two locals in the contest:
Caitlin Millat from Achievement First Apollo Elementary in Brooklyn, NY
Matt Polazzo from Stuyvesant High School in New York City, NY

Teachers need to be honored, for the most part they are not appreciated and underpaid. The Obama Administration has recognized the work that needs to be done to move forward our education system. Jeopardy has been on the air for a long time and it was a perfect match for Educational Insights.

The two-week tournament will feature fifteen of the nation’s brightest K-12 teachers, with the winner receiving $100,000 and a guaranteed spot in the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions airing later this year.

Teachers become educators for the love of learning- here’s their chance to shine and be proud. No One said it would be easy, they all had to study just as hard as their students for this nationally televised test. And the winners? Well, bragging rights never hurt anyone!

They probably did a lot of studying and everyone is a winner. Although, the top winners are winning big!  The second place winner will earn a minimum of $50,000 and third place $25,000.  Semifinalists receive $10,000, and contestants eliminated in the first round receive $5,000. In addition, each teacher will receive a Classroom “Jeopardy!” unit for their school courtesy of Educational Insights.

Educational Insights manufacturers a product called Classroom Jeopardy. It takes the Jeopardy game show and gives teachers the opportunity to excite their students about learning and drive up the academic scores. There is so much negative about the public schools, it’s nice to focus on the positive influence from teachers.

The newer Classroom Jeopardy version embeds video, audio and pictures. Educational Insights has surpassed any expectations with the improved version. Students love it!

There’s even a contest for teachers that did not get on the show. EliteToyStore.com is sponsoring their own contest to win products for teachers and parents. Gift Certificates will be issued for scoring points and there isn’t a first, second or third place. If the answer is correct you win. Check out the details: on the facebook page. Click over to the contest tab. The more point the bigger the Gift Certificate, sign up today!

Dollhouse Kit Provides Big Educational Opportunities

Are architects, designers and builders made or born? Do they discover their love of construction and color in school? Or when they’re children playing with Legos and Barbies? What happens once they’ve outgrown their blocks?

If the love of all things “house” is genetic, an excellent way to keep your little designer’s imagination alive is to build a dollhouse with him or her. Building a dollhouse allows parent and child to share the fun of learning construction, architectural design, electricity and interior design. The Vineyard Cottage Dollhouse Kit

Local miniature shops display kits of all styles and sizes. A kit supplies precut wood and instructions that, when finished, are the framework for continued creativity.

Electrifying a dollhouse teaches the basic principles of electricity. Dollhouse electrical kits make things easy, with a complete instruction booklet and supplies. It’s fun to shop for chandeliers, fireplaces and lamps, once the wiring is done.

Question: What is Classroom Jeopardy!?

Sony Pictures and Educational Insights are teaming up for the updated version of Classroom Jeopardy!  This exciting interactive game brings the sights and sounds of the TV show Jeopardy! to your classroom. EliteToyStore.com highly recommends this unit because from the moment students hear the distinctive Jeopardy! theme music, they’ll be immersed in an entertaining multimedia experience. Developed in cooperation with the creators of the award-winning quiz show, Classroom Jeopardy! plays just like the television version with one important difference: the content is tailored by you, the educator, to align with your own curriculum. When it comes to classroom use, most multimedia games are hit and miss: they might cover some of the concepts in your curriculum, but they may also include content your class hasn’t studied.

Are you over scheduling activities for the kids and becoming a Taxi-Parent?

Are you a “Taxi Mom or Dad?” Driving all over town, every day, trying to engage your child in “THE MOST ENTERTAINING ACTIVITES POSSIBLE?” As a parent of three in the year 2010 – I am exhausted! When I was a kid we were sent out to play in the morning and had to be back by dark. We played with the neighborhood kids and we had the time of our lives! We were not obese because we would ride bikes and pedal cars.  Did you know retailers do not even stock pedal cars in stores?  They do not sell!  Small businesses can’t afford to line them up in the stores.  We didn’t have a computer and the internet.  We had a brain (and hopefully still do!). We were forced to use it for imagination!

Little boys wanted to be astronauts and play in a rocket ship.  Little girls wanted to play house with their Calico Critters in an imaginary world. We don’t live in a society where we can just HAVE FUN with friends and siblings in the backyard.  I know times have changed and it is not always safe but I miss it.  The reality is – we are compelled to schedule our children for activities to cover the entire day – EVERYDAY! Sports are very important, they promote exercise and teamwork. Monday soccer, Tuesday swimming, Wednesday is a playdate, Thursday soccer, Friday Karate, Saturday games – STOP THE MADNESS! Yes, we can have family game night and create long term relationships with our family, that’s entertaining.  Can we just enjoy ourselves and play – without a hectic schedule? Please………..
Gotta go – Jimmy’s late for Karate and we promised we’d meet friends for dinner!!
